Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle is a plant whose root and other parts are used as medicine. It is used for different health conditions, but there is lack of scientific evidence that would approve whether it is really effective. Stinging nettle root proves to be effective in the treatment of urination problems (painful urination, frequent urination, irritable bladder, nighttime urination, and enlarged prostate.
Stinging nettle root is useful for joints, it's used as an astringent and a diuretic. Other parts of the plant are used with fluids in "irrigation therapy" for urinary tract inflammation, urinary tract infections (UTI), and kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), as well as for hayfever, allergies, and osteoarthritis. Sometimes the product is used for internal bleeding, such as nosebleeds, uterine bleeding, and bowel bleeding. The parts of stinging nettle above ground are used for poor circulation, anemia, diabetes, an enlarged spleen, diarrhea, stomach acid, dysentery, lung congestion, asthma, rash and eczema, preventing the signs of aging, cancer, wound healing, "blood purification," and as a tonic.

Stinging nettle is safe when correctly used for up to six months. It can lead to excessive sweating and stomach complaints. Skin contact with the plant can result in skin irritation. There is little information about safety of stinging nettle when used for a long period of time. Pregnant and breast-feeding women have to ensure that they don't use stinging nettle in this period, as it can be really unsafe. It can cause a miscarriage by stimulating uterine contractions. So, it's better to avoid the plant in this period.
People with diabetes should be aware of the fact that above ground parts of stinging nettle can decrease the levels of blood sugar. It's recommended to monitor the blood sugar regularly. The product can also lower blood pressure, so be careful when taking medications against blood pressure in combination with stinging nettle. If you suffer from hypertension, discuss possible using of stinging nettle with your doctor before starting it. Kidney problems are possible from the use of this product, though.
